Thread Pitches Explained: 1/2x28, 5/8x24 and the Suppressor Mounts That Fit

Two thread pitches cover the overwhelming majority of American rifles: 1/2x28 for .223 / 5.56 and most 9mm builds, and 5/8x24 for .30 caliber and larger. The numbers describe the threads themselves. The "1/2" is the outside diameter of the threaded section in inches. The "28" is the threads per inch (TPI). So 1/2x28 means a half-inch diameter with 28 threads per inch. 5/8x24 means a five-eighths-inch diameter with 24 threads per inch.


Thread Pitches Explained

Getting this right is not a preference issue. It's a safety issue. Thread the wrong muzzle device or suppressor onto a barrel and, at best, it won't fit. At worst, a mismatched bore diameter causes a bullet to strike the inside of the device, which can destroy the suppressor, the barrel, and injure the shooter. This is the one spec on your rifle where "close enough" doesn't exist.

What the Numbers Actually Mean


A thread pitch specification has two parts.


The first number is the major diameter of the threaded section, measured across the outside of the thread crests. On a 1/2x28 barrel, that threaded section measures 0.5 inches across. On 5/8x24, it measures 0.625 inches. The 5/8x24 thread is roughly 25 percent larger in diameter than 1/2x28.


The second number is threads per inch (TPI), which describes how fine or coarse the threads are. A 1/2x28 barrel has 28 individual thread crests in every linear inch of threaded section. A 5/8x24 has 24. More TPI means finer threads, which provide more engagement points and allow more precise timing when using crush washers or shims.


A third element is often unstated: thread direction. Right-hand (RH) threads tighten clockwise and are the default on virtually all American firearms. Left-hand (LH) threads tighten counterclockwise and appear on many European and AK-pattern rifles. If a spec doesn't say LH, assume RH. When it does say LH (like M14x1 LH on an AK), you tighten counterclockwise, and a right-hand device will not thread on at all.


Metric pitches use a different format. M13.5x1 LH means a 13.5mm diameter with 1mm between thread crests (not threads per inch). Metric specs describe the distance between threads rather than the count per inch, which is the reverse logic of the imperial system. These show up on Sig, Glock, HK, B&T, Steyr, and most European platforms.


Why the Diameter Matters (The Safety Part)


The reason .30 caliber rifles use 5/8x24 instead of 1/2x28 isn't tradition. It's physics.

A muzzle device or suppressor has a bore through the center for the bullet to pass through. That bore has to be larger than the projectile, with enough clearance for the bullet plus a safety margin for any minor alignment variance. A .308 bullet is 0.308 inches in diameter. A 5.56 bullet is 0.224 inches.


If you thread a .30 caliber barrel to 1/2x28, the threaded section is only 0.5 inches in outer diameter. Cut a bore large enough for a .308 projectile through the center of that, and the remaining wall thickness is dangerously thin. You have very little material holding the device on. On a buttoned barrel, the threading process can even distort the bore.


The 5/8x24 thread gives you 0.625 inches of outer diameter to work with, which leaves adequate wall thickness around a .30 caliber bore. That's the entire reason the larger pitch exists.


The catastrophic failure mode: if the device's bore is too small for the caliber, or if a mismatched adapter introduces enough misalignment, the bullet strikes the inside of the muzzle device or the suppressor's baffles. A baffle strike destroys the suppressor (a multi-thousand-dollar item you waited months for through the ATF), can rupture the device, and can send fragments back toward the shooter. This is not a theoretical risk. It happens every year to people who took a shortcut on thread matching.

Note that .300 Blackout uses 5/8x24 despite being built on the AR-15 platform with a .30 caliber bullet in a 5.56-sized case. This is a common source of confusion. If you build a 300 Blackout upper, your muzzle threads are 5/8x24, not the 1/2x28 you'd find on the 5.56 upper sitting next to it in the safe.


How to Identify the Threads on Your Barrel


If you don't know your barrel's thread pitch, there are three ways to find out.


Method 1: Check the manufacturer's spec sheet. Every quality barrel maker (Faxon, Ballistic Advantage, Criterion, Proof, Bartlein) lists the thread pitch in the product specifications. This is the fastest and most reliable method if you know the barrel's make and model.


Method 2: Measure with calipers and a thread pitch gauge. Use calipers to measure the outer diameter of the threaded section. About 0.5 inches means 1/2 diameter. About 0.625 inches means 5/8 diameter. Then use a thread pitch gauge (an inexpensive tool with a set of toothed blades) to find the blade that seats cleanly into the threads without gaps. The blade will be stamped with the TPI. Combine the two measurements and you have your pitch.


Method 3: Test-fit a known device. If you have a muzzle device of a known pitch, thread it on by hand. It should start easily and turn smoothly. Never force it. If it binds after a turn or two, stop immediately. Forcing a mismatched thread damages both the barrel and the device, and a 1/2x28 device will partially start on some other pitches before binding, which is exactly how people damage barrels.


If your barrel came from an unknown source, a parts kit, or a used rifle with no documentation, use Method 2. A thread pitch gauge costs less than $15 and eliminates the guesswork entirely.


Which Suppressor Mounts Fit Which Pitch


Here's where thread pitch connects directly to your suppressor decision.


Direct thread mounts are pitch-specific by definition. A 1/2x28 direct thread mount threads onto a 1/2x28 barrel. To run the same suppressor on a 5/8x24 barrel, you need a second direct thread mount in that pitch. This is one of the real drawbacks of direct thread for multi-host use: you buy a mount for every thread pitch in your safe.


QD mounts decouple the suppressor from the barrel's thread pitch. The muzzle device installs on the barrel (in whatever pitch that barrel uses), and the suppressor's QD mount locks onto the muzzle device. So you buy a 1/2x28 muzzle device for your 5.56 AR, a 5/8x24 muzzle device for your .300 Blackout, and the same suppressor moves between both with no mount changes. The Adapter Question (And Why Experts Avoid Them)


Thread adapters exist. A 1/2x28 to 5/8x24 adapter lets you thread a 5/8x24 suppressor mount onto a 1/2x28 barrel. They cost $20 to $50 and seem like an easy fix for a mismatched setup.


Thread Pitches Explained

Experienced shooters and gunsmiths generally advise against them, for one specific reason: tolerance stacking.


Every threaded interface introduces a small amount of concentricity variance. The barrel threads have a tolerance. The adapter's internal threads have a tolerance. The adapter's external threads have another tolerance. The suppressor mount has yet another. Stack four sets of tolerances instead of two, and the cumulative misalignment between your bore axis and your suppressor's bore can grow enough to cause a baffle strike.


Modern machining keeps this risk low with quality components, but it's a real, non-zero increase in risk on an expensive item. If you use an adapter, at minimum:


  • Buy a high-quality adapter from a known manufacturer, not the cheapest option online.

  • Secure it with Rocksett or a similar high-temperature thread compound and let it cure fully (24 hours minimum).

  • Always check bore alignment with an alignment rod before firing a single round. An alignment rod is a precision-ground rod you insert through the suppressor and into the barrel. If it seats cleanly with even clearance all around, your alignment is good. If it binds or shows uneven clearance, do not fire.


The better solution, when possible, is to have the barrel threaded correctly in the first place, or to buy a suppressor mount that matches your barrel's actual pitch.


The Expert Consensus: Thread 5/8x24 When You Can


Here's a piece of gunsmith wisdom that most consumer-facing content doesn't cover. If you're having a barrel threaded and you have a choice, thread it 5/8x24 unless the barrel is .223 / 5.56 or a rimfire.


The reasoning: 5/8x24 leaves more material under the threads (a thicker wall around the bore), which reduces the risk of the muzzle belling or distorting during threading, especially on buttoned barrels. It also gives you more shoulder engagement for the muzzle device to seat against, and it opens up the far larger 5/8x24 suppressor mount ecosystem.


The main constraint is barrel contour. A 0.750-inch muzzle diameter (common on lighter profiles) doesn't leave much shoulder once you cut 5/8x24 threads. If your muzzle is thin, 1/2x28 may be the only option that leaves an adequate shoulder. But on any barrel with enough meat at the muzzle, 5/8x24 is the better choice for anything other than a .224-caliber bore.


The corollary: avoid oddball pitches. Some barrels ship with 9/16x32, 9/16x24, or .595x32 threads. These work, but the muzzle device and suppressor mount selection in those pitches is extremely limited, and it will only get worse over time as the industry consolidates around 1/2x28 and 5/8x24. If you have a choice, stay in the standard.


Common Thread Pitch Mistakes


1. Assuming .300 Blackout uses 1/2x28 because it's an AR-15. It uses 5/8x24. The AR-15 platform doesn't determine thread pitch; the caliber does.


2. Forcing a device that binds. If a muzzle device doesn't start easily and turn smoothly by hand, stop. Some mismatched pitches will start a turn or two before binding, and forcing them damages the barrel threads permanently.


3. Buying a suppressor mount before confirming the barrel's pitch. Measure first. A thread pitch gauge costs less than a returned mount's shipping.


4. Using a cheap adapter without checking alignment. If you must use an adapter, verify concentricity with an alignment rod before firing. Never assume.


5. Ignoring thread direction on European or AK platforms. M14x1 LH on an AK tightens counterclockwise. A right-hand device will not thread on. If your rifle is European or AK-pattern, verify the direction before ordering.

What This Means for Your Build


The short version: 1/2x28 is the standard for .223 / 5.56 and 9mm. 5/8x24 is the standard for .30 caliber and up, including .300 Blackout. The thread pitch on your barrel determines which muzzle devices and direct thread suppressor mounts will fit.
