AR-15 Maintenance Schedule: What to Clean After 100, 500 & 2,000 Rounds

The AR-15 is often called self-cleaning. It isn't, but it's remarkably forgiving, and it needs far less babying than most people think. Here's the simple version of a maintenance schedule organized by round count: after every session (roughly 100 rounds or fewer), do a quick clean and re-lube. Every 500 rounds, field strip and clean thoroughly. Every 2,000 rounds, do a full detail clean and inspect wear parts. Lubrication matters more than spotless cleanliness, and a properly lubed AR will run through tens of thousands of rounds with basic upkeep.


AR-15 Maintenance Schedule

What almost every maintenance guide misses is that your rifle is more than its bolt carrier group and barrel. Your handguard, light mount, and suppressor mount are all under constant vibration and recoil, and they need periodic torque checks on the same schedule. A perfectly clean rifle with a light that walked loose is still a rifle you can't trust. This guide covers both: the standard cleaning schedule by round count, and the accessory checks that keep your whole setup zeroed and secure.

The Philosophy: Lube More Than You Scrub


Before the schedule, two principles that experienced shooters agree on and beginners usually get backwards.


Lubrication matters more than cleanliness. The AR-15's most common malfunctions come from running dry, not from being dirty. A bolt carrier group caked in carbon but properly lubed will keep running. A spotless BCG run bone-dry will gall, wear, and eventually choke. If you have limited time, prioritize wiping down and re-lubing the BCG over obsessively scrubbing every carbon speck.


You can over-clean and over-lube. Over-cleaning the bore (especially aggressive copper removal and running a rod from the muzzle) causes more wear than it prevents. Over-lubing turns your rifle into a dirt magnet, because excess oil attracts dust and carbon into an abrasive paste and can seep into the trigger group. The goal is a thin film on the right parts, not a rifle dripping oil from every opening.

With those two principles set, here's the schedule.


After Every Session (Up to ~100 Rounds): Quick Maintenance


This is your light, fast, do-it-every-time routine. It takes 10 to 15 minutes and prevents fouling from snowballing.


Confirm the rifle is unloaded. Magazine out, bolt locked back, visually and physically check the chamber. Always the first step.


Field strip. Separate the upper and lower, remove the charging handle and bolt carrier group.


Wipe down the BCG. Use a rag and a carbon remover or CLP to wipe carbon off the bolt carrier, bolt, cam pin, and firing pin. You don't need to disassemble the bolt every time. Just knock down the loose fouling.


Quick bore pass. Run a bore snake through the barrel from chamber to muzzle (never muzzle to chamber, which risks the crown). One or two passes is plenty for a light session.


Re-lubricate. Apply a thin layer of lube to the BCG's wear points: the bolt body, cam pin, gas rings, and the carrier rails. A drop under the gas key area. Light coat on the charging handle. This is the most important step of the whole routine.


Function check. Reassemble, confirm the safety works and the bolt cycles, and you're done.


For a rifle you shoot casually a few times a month, this quick routine after each session is genuinely all most people need between deeper cleanings.


Every 500 Rounds: Thorough Cleaning


Every 500 rounds (or after a heavy single session, or after any suppressed shooting, which fouls much faster), step up to a thorough field-strip cleaning. Budget 30 to 45 minutes.


Everything from the quick routine, plus:


Disassemble the bolt. Remove the firing pin, cam pin, and extractor from the bolt. Clean carbon from the bolt tail, the extractor, and under the extractor where carbon builds up and causes extraction problems.


Scrub the bolt carrier interior. Carbon accumulates inside the carrier and on the bolt tail. A carbon scraper tool makes quick work of this. Don't obsess over a mirror finish; knock down the hard buildup.


Clean the chamber and locking lugs. This area gets ignored and it shouldn't. Use a chamber brush on a short rod to clean the chamber and the barrel extension lug recesses. Carbon here causes extraction failures. Thirty seconds of attention prevents a malfunction.


Clean the bore properly. Run a solvent-soaked patch, then a bore brush, then patches until they come out mostly clean. Use a bore guide to protect the chamber, and always clean chamber-to-muzzle. Don't chase every trace of copper; carbon is what pits barrels, not copper.


Wipe down the gas key. Clean carbon off the exterior of the gas key on top of the carrier. Confirm the two gas key screws are staked and tight.


Wipe the upper and lower interiors. A general wipe-down of the receiver interiors removes accumulated grit.


Re-lubricate fully and function check.

Every 2,000 Rounds: Full Detail Clean and Inspection


Every 2,000 rounds (or annually, whichever comes first), do a complete detail strip and a real inspection. This is where you catch wear before it becomes a failure. Budget an hour or more.


Everything from the 500-round clean, plus:


Clean the gas system. Run a purpose-made pipe cleaner wet with solvent through the gas tube, followed by a dry one. Clean the portion of the tube that extends into the upper with cotton swabs. If you run an adjustable gas block, remove and clean carbon off the adjustment screw.


Detail strip the lower. Remove the buffer and buffer spring, wipe them down, and lightly lube the spring. Inspect the trigger group and wipe out any accumulated grit or excess oil that has migrated in.


Inspect wear parts thoroughly. This is the real point of the 2,000-round service:


  • Bolt lugs: Check for cracks or peening, especially at the cam pin hole area, which is the most common bolt failure point. Use a fingernail or magnification to feel for cracks.


  • Gas rings: Confirm they still provide tension. Stand the bolt on its head on a table; if the carrier's weight collapses the bolt, the gas rings are worn. Replace them (they're cheap).


  • Extractor and extractor spring: Inspect for chips and confirm spring tension. Many builders proactively replace the extractor spring and gas rings around every 2,500 rounds on a duty rifle.


  • Firing pin: Check the tip for damage.


  • Every surface: Look for cracks, especially on the bolt and around high-stress areas.


Reassemble, lubricate, and function check.


Proactive Part Replacement Schedule (Duty / Hard Use)


If your AR is a duty rifle or you depend on it, proactive part replacement prevents failures. For a casual range rifle, you can simply shoot until something wears and replace it then. For a rifle that has to work, consider this schedule:

Remember that these are conservative preventive intervals. AR-15s have run past 10,000 rounds with only lubrication. Bolts routinely last 10,000+ rounds, barrels 10,000 to 20,000+, and lower receivers essentially forever. Don't replace parts on arbitrary schedules if you're a recreational shooter. Inspect, test, and replace when you see actual wear.


The Accessory Check (What Every Other Guide Skips)


Here's the maintenance your rifle needs that almost no cleaning guide mentions. Your mounted accessories are under constant recoil and vibration, and hardware works loose over time. Fold these checks into your existing schedule.


At the 500-Round Interval: Quick Accessory Check


Light mount: Confirm the mount hardware is tight and the light hasn't shifted. A light that walks loose changes your beam position and can eventually fall off. Check the M-LOK or Picatinny hardware and the light body screws. If you run a pivot or adjustable mount, check the pivot lock too.


Optic and sight mounts: Confirm your optic mount and any iron sight bases are tight and haven't shifted zero.


Sling mounts: Check QD sling swivel cups and any attachment points.


Suppressor (if run): After suppressed shooting, check that the can is still properly torqued to its mount. Direct-thread cans in particular can work loose. Apply anti-seize at reassembly to prevent carbon lockup.


At the 2,000-Round Interval: Full Accessory Inspection


Handguard: Confirm the handguard clamp screws or barrel nut interface are still at spec torque. A handguard that loosens affects both your accessory zero and, on a free-float rail, potentially your barrel harmonics. Re-torque to the manufacturer's spec if anything has moved. Gas block: Confirm the gas block set screws are tight and the block hasn't shifted on the barrel. A gas block that moves causes cycling problems. This is easy to check when the handguard is off during a detail clean.


Muzzle device / suppressor mount: Confirm your muzzle device is still properly timed and torqued. On a suppressor host, verify the QD mount interface is clean and the suppressor still locks up with proper tension.


Light mount deep check: Beyond the quick tightness check, confirm the mount body hasn't developed any play and the light still holds its zeroed position relative to your point of aim.


Building these accessory checks into your 500 and 2,000-round cleanings costs a few extra minutes and prevents the single most frustrating range problem: a rifle that shoots fine but has an accessory that shifted or came loose when you needed it.


Suppressed Shooting Changes the Schedule


If you run a suppressor, everything fouls faster. A suppressed AR-15 dumps significantly more carbon back into the action because of the increased back pressure. Plan to:

  • Clean more frequently: treat a suppressed session as roughly double the fouling of an unsuppressed one.

  • Pay extra attention to the bolt carrier interior and gas system, which take the brunt of the added carbon.

  • Check your suppressor mount and muzzle device torque after every few sessions, since the heat and pressure cycling can loosen a mount over time.

  • Apply anti-seize to the suppressor mount threads to prevent carbon lockup, which can weld a can to its mount over enough rounds.

Basic Tools You Actually Need


You don't need an expensive "complete" kit. A functional AR-15 maintenance kit costs $15 to $40 and includes:


  • Cleaning rod (one-piece preferred) or bore snake

  • Bore guide (protects the chamber)

  • Bore brush and chamber brush (brass or nylon, never steel)

  • Cleaning patches and a solvent

  • Quality lubricant or CLP

  • Carbon scraper for the BCG (optional but useful)

  • A rag and a small parts brush

  • An inch-pound torque driver and armorer's wrench for accessory checks


Avoid household oils and grease. They gum up and don't protect like a proper firearm lubricant.


Common Maintenance Mistakes


1. Running the rifle dry. The single most common cause of AR malfunctions. Keep the BCG properly lubed. Lube beats scrub.


2. Over-lubricating. Excess oil attracts carbon and dust into an abrasive paste and can seep into the trigger group. Thin film, right parts.


3. Cleaning muzzle-to-chamber. This damages the crown, which hurts accuracy. Always clean chamber-to-muzzle with a bore guide.


4. Obsessing over copper. Carbon pits barrels, not copper. Don't over-scrub the bore chasing every trace of copper fouling.


5. Ignoring the chamber and bolt tail. Carbon here causes extraction failures, and it's the most commonly skipped area. Thirty seconds with a chamber brush prevents malfunctions.


6. Forgetting the accessories entirely. A clean rifle with a loose light mount, shifted gas block, or loosened handguard is still unreliable. Check your mounted hardware on the same schedule you clean.


7. Skipping the function check. Always verify safe operation after reassembly before the rifle goes back into service.
