How to Install a Free-Float Handguard: Tools, Torque Specs & Common Mistakes

Installing a free-float handguard on your AR-15 is a 30 to 60 minute job the first time you do it, and it comes down to five core steps: remove the old handguard and barrel nut, install the new barrel nut and torque it while aligning the gas tube passage, install a low-profile gas block and gas tube, slide on and clamp the handguard, then verify everything is aligned and torqued. The two specs you'll reference most are the barrel nut torque (typically 30 to 80 ft-lbs depending on your handguard) and the handguard clamp screw torque (usually 25 to 45 in-lbs).


How to Install a Free-Float Handguard

The single most important thing to understand before you start: the gas tube has to pass cleanly through the barrel nut and into the upper receiver without touching the edges. You achieve that alignment by torquing the barrel nut up to the correct position, never by backing it off. Get this one detail right and the rest of the install is straightforward.

Safety First


Before touching a single tool, confirm the rifle is unloaded. Remove the magazine, lock the bolt to the rear, visually and physically inspect the chamber, and remove all ammunition from your workspace. Separate the upper receiver from the lower. You'll be working on the upper only. Keep the lower and any ammunition in a different area entirely.


This is standard practice, but it's worth stating plainly: every firearm-related task starts with confirming the gun is clear.


The Complete Tool List


Here's everything you need, with realistic 2026 pricing. If you plan to build more than one AR in your life, these tools are a one-time investment that pays for itself against gunsmith labor.


Required:


  • Upper receiver vise block ($25 to $60): Holds the upper securely without deforming it. Never clamp a bare receiver in a vise.

  • Bench vise ($40 to $150): To hold the vise block. A sturdy one matters here.

  • AR-15 armorer's wrench ($30 to $80): For barrel nut removal and installation. Most have the mil-spec barrel nut pattern plus other useful features.

  • Torque wrench (1/2" drive, 0 to 100 ft-lbs range) ($40 to $150): For the barrel nut. This is not optional. "Tight enough" is not a torque spec.

  • Inch-pound torque driver ($30 to $80): For the handguard clamp screws and gas block set screws, which are torqued in inch-pounds, not foot-pounds.

  • Hex key / Torx set ($10 to $25): For gas block set screws and handguard hardware.

  • Anti-seize or gun grease ($10 to $20): For the barrel nut threads.

  • Blue (medium) thread locker ($8 to $15): For gas block set screws and handguard hardware.


Situationally required:


  • Punch set and hammer ($20 to $40): If you're removing a pinned front sight base.

  • Roll pin punches ($15 to $30): For gas tube roll pins.

  • Heat gun ($20 to $40): To loosen a stubborn factory barrel nut or break down thread locker.

  • Bench block ($15 to $30): To support the upper during pin removal.


Total first-time tool investment: roughly $250 to $600. Once you own them, subsequent installs cost nothing in tools.


Step 1: Remove the Old Handguard and Barrel Nut


Secure the upper receiver in the vise block, and the vise block in the vise. Confirm it's held firmly but not over-clamped.


If you're removing a drop-in handguard, pull back the delta ring and slide the handguard halves off. If you're removing an old free-float handguard, unclamp it from its barrel nut and slide it forward off the barrel.


Now remove the barrel nut. Fit the armorer's wrench to the barrel nut and use your torque wrench or a breaker bar for leverage. Turn counterclockwise (lefty-loosey). Factory barrel nuts are often torqued hard and may have thread locker, so this can take real force. If it won't budge, apply heat from a heat gun to break down any thread locker, then try again. The barrel nut and delta ring assembly will slide off the barrel as a unit once loosened.


Note: you will not reuse the factory barrel nut. Free-float handguards almost always come with their own proprietary barrel nut that the handguard clamps or threads onto.


Step 2: Remove the Front Sight Base or Old Gas Block


If your rifle has a fixed front sight base (the traditional triangular "A-frame"), it has to come off to make room for the free-float handguard, and you'll replace it with a low-profile gas block.


Fixed front sight bases are usually held on by tapered pins. Drive them out with a punch and hammer, working in the correct direction (they're tapered, so they only come out one way, usually from left to right when looking from the shooter's position). This is the hardest part of the whole job. The pins are often extremely tight, and some builders drill them out as a last resort. Support the upper on a bench block during this step.


If your rifle already has a low-profile gas block held by set screws, just loosen the set screws with a hex key and slide it off. Much easier.


Remove the gas tube from the old gas block once the block is off or ready to come off.


Step 3: Install the New Barrel Nut (The Critical Step)


Clean the receiver threads. Apply a thin coat of anti-seize or gun grease to the threads. This prevents galling and ensures an accurate torque reading.


Thread the new barrel nut (the one that came with your handguard) onto the upper receiver by hand. It should turn smoothly. If it binds or won't hand-tighten, stop. Forcing a cross-threaded barrel nut destroys the receiver threads and voids your warranty. Back it off and restart until it threads cleanly by hand.


Now torque the barrel nut using your armorer's wrench and torque wrench. This is where the critical detail comes in.


Your handguard's instructions will specify a torque value, almost always a range between 30 and 80 ft-lbs (Midwest Industries specs 40 ft-lbs, KAK specs 35 ft-lbs, many mil-spec nuts run 30 to 80). Best practice from quality builders is to torque the nut in three cycles: torque to the low end of the spec, back off completely, torque again, back off, then torque a third and final time. This "breaks in" the threads and gives a more consistent, reliable final torque.


Then comes the alignment. The barrel nut has a passage or notch the gas tube must pass through to reach the upper receiver's gas tube hole. After you reach the minimum torque, check whether that passage lines up so the gas tube will sit centered without touching the edges. If it doesn't line up perfectly, continue tightening (never loosening) up to the maximum torque value until the passage aligns.


If you reach the maximum torque and it still doesn't align, loosen the nut completely and start the torque sequence over. Never back the nut off a small amount to achieve alignment. An under-torqued barrel nut can loosen under fire and destroy your accuracy or worse. The gas tube alignment must be achieved within the torque range, by tightening up to it, not by loosening down to it.


Step 4: Install the Low-Profile Gas Block and Gas Tube


Install the gas tube into the new low-profile gas block first, securing it with the gas tube roll pin.


Apply blue thread locker to the gas block set screws. Slide the gas block onto the barrel, aligning the gas port in the gas block with the gas port hole in the barrel. This alignment is critical: if the ports don't line up, the rifle won't cycle. Many barrels have a small dimple or the port is visible to help you align it.


Once aligned, tighten the gas block set screws to spec (typically 25 to 40 in-lbs, check your gas block's instructions) with your inch-pound driver. Confirm the gas tube points straight back toward the receiver and will pass through the barrel nut passage cleanly.


Step 5: Install and Clamp the Handguard


Clean any oil or grease off the outside of the barrel nut and the inside of the handguard, so the clamping surfaces grip properly.


Slide the handguard over the barrel and gas block assembly, guiding the gas tube through the handguard and into the barrel nut passage. The gas tube should not contact the edges of any opening it passes through.


Depending on your handguard's design, it will attach to the barrel nut one of three ways:


  • Clamp interface: The handguard slides over the barrel nut and clamps to it with side screws. Alternate-tighten the clamp screws evenly to the specified torque (commonly 45 in-lbs, applied by alternating between the screws so the clamp seats square).

  • Thread-on interface: The handguard threads directly onto the barrel nut, with a lock ring or set screws holding the final position.

  • Radial screw interface: Screws around the rear circumference fasten the handguard body to the barrel nut.


Apply blue thread locker to the handguard screws, and torque them to the manufacturer's inch-pound spec, alternating between screws to seat the handguard evenly. Do not over-torque these. Inch-pound screws strip easily.


Step 6: Verify Everything


Before you call it done, run through this checklist:



How to Install a Free-Float Handguard
  • Gas tube alignment: Look through the barrel nut passage and confirm the gas tube is centered, not touching any edges. Misalignment causes cycling problems and gas tube wear.

  • Free-float clearance: The handguard should not touch the barrel anywhere. Spin the handguard slightly or press on it and confirm there's no barrel contact. That's the entire point of a free-float rail.

  • Handguard is level: Confirm the top rail is aligned with the receiver's top rail so your optics and sights sit true. Most handguards use the barrel nut's anti-rotation feature to index this automatically, but confirm it visually.

  • All torque values met: Barrel nut in spec, gas block set screws in spec, handguard clamp screws in spec.

  • Function check: Reassemble the upper, reinstall the BCG and charging handle, rejoin the upper and lower, and perform a function check (safe/fire, bolt cycling) before live fire.


After the first range session (100 to 200 rounds), re-check the handguard clamp screws and gas block set screws. Initial torque can settle slightly as components seat.

Always defer to your specific handguard's printed instructions over these general ranges. Manufacturers spec their own values for a reason.


Common Mistakes That Ruin the Install


1. Backing off the barrel nut to align the gas tube. The single most common and most dangerous mistake. Always achieve gas tube alignment by tightening up to the correct position within the torque range, never by loosening. An under-torqued barrel nut can back off under recoil.

2. Clamping the bare receiver in a vise. This deforms or cracks the receiver. Always use an upper receiver vise block. No exceptions.

3. Forcing a cross-threaded barrel nut. If the nut won't hand-tighten smoothly, it's cross-threaded or the threads are damaged. Forcing it destroys the receiver. Stop and restart.

4. Misaligning the gas port on the gas block. If the gas block's port doesn't line up with the barrel's gas port, the rifle won't cycle. Take your time on this alignment and double-check before torquing the set screws.

5. Over-torquing inch-pound screws. The handguard clamp screws and gas block set screws are torqued in inch-pounds, which is a fraction of foot-pounds. Grabbing a foot-pound wrench or just cranking them by feel strips the threads. Use an inch-pound driver.

6. Forgetting thread locker. Gas block set screws and handguard hardware need blue thread locker. Without it, they vibrate loose under recoil. Don't skip this.

7. Skipping the free-float verification. If the handguard touches the barrel anywhere, it's not actually free-floating, and you've lost the accuracy benefit. Confirm zero barrel contact before finishing.

8. Buying a handguard that doesn't fit your gas system. This one happens before the install even starts. If your handguard is too short to cover the gas block, no amount of correct installation will fix it. Confirm the length against your gas system first. When to Have a Gunsmith Do It


This is a very achievable DIY job for a patient builder with the right tools. But there are cases where paying a gunsmith $50 to $100 makes sense:


  • You don't own the tools and won't build another AR (the tool cost exceeds the labor).

  • Your front sight base is pinned and you're not comfortable driving out taper pins.

  • You've never torqued anything critical and want the barrel nut done right the first time.

  • Your barrel nut is seized and you can't break it loose safely.


There's no shame in it. A correctly installed handguard matters more than the pride of doing it yourself.
