How to Mount a Suppressor: Direct Thread, QD & HUB Step-by-Step Guide

Mounting a suppressor comes down to three systems, and each has its own procedure. Direct thread screws the can straight onto your barrel's threads. QD (quick-detach) locks the can onto a muzzle device that's permanently installed on the barrel.

Across all three, the process follows the same arc: confirm the rifle is unloaded, clean the threads, match the thread pitch, install the mount, and verify bore alignment before firing.


The one step you cannot skip, regardless of system, is the alignment check. A suppressor mounted with even slight misalignment can suffer a baffle strike, where the bullet clips the inside of the can. That destroys the suppressor (a multi-thousand-dollar item you waited months to receive), can rupture the device, and can injure you. A $60 alignment rod is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy. Use it every time you install a mount for the first time.


This guide gives you three clean, separate step-by-step procedures plus the safety checks that apply to all of them.


Before You Start: Safety and Prerequisites


Confirm the firearm is completely unloaded. Remove the magazine, lock the bolt to the rear, and visually and physically inspect the chamber. Remove all ammunition from your workspace. Every suppressor installation starts here, no exceptions.


Confirm your suppressor is legal and the paperwork is complete. You must have your approved ATF tax stamp in hand (or the approved eForm) before you take possession and mount the suppressor. This guide covers the mechanical process only. Legal compliance is your responsibility.


Confirm caliber and thread compatibility. Your suppressor must be rated for your caliber, and the mount must match your barrel's thread pitch. A 5.56 can rated for .223/5.56 must not be used on a larger caliber. Thread pitch must match exactly: 1/2x28 for most .223/5.56 and 9mm, 5/8x24 for most .30 caliber.


Gather your tools:


  • Alignment rod (caliber-specific, roughly $30 to $60)

  • Torque wrench (for QD muzzle devices and HUB mounts)

  • High-temperature anti-seize (Rocksett is the standard for suppressor threads)

  • Armorer's wrench and vise block (for QD muzzle device installation)

  • Shims or crush washer (for timing a QD muzzle device)

  • Clean rag and thread-cleaning supplies


How to Mount a Direct Thread Suppressor


Direct thread is the simplest method. The suppressor screws straight onto the barrel's muzzle threads with no intermediate muzzle device.


Step 1: Remove any existing muzzle device. If your barrel has a flash hider or brake, remove it so the bare threads are exposed. If your barrel already has exposed threads with a thread protector, remove the protector.


Step 2: Clean the threads. Wipe the barrel's muzzle threads clean of carbon, oil, and debris. Clean threads seat properly and torque consistently. Inspect for any thread damage while you're there.


Step 3: Apply anti-seize. Put a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize (Rocksett or similar) on the barrel threads. This prevents the can from galling or carbon-welding to the barrel, which makes future removal far easier. A little goes a long way.


Step 4: Hand-thread the suppressor on. Start the suppressor onto the threads by hand, turning clockwise. It should start easily and turn smoothly. If it binds in the first turn or two, stop, back it off, and restart. Cross-threading damages both the barrel and the can. Continue threading until the rear of the suppressor seats firmly against the barrel shoulder.


Step 5: Snug it down. Direct thread suppressors are generally hand-tightened until snug against the shoulder. Some manufacturers specify a light torque value; follow their instructions. Do not overtighten, which can make removal difficult after the threads heat-cycle.


Step 6: Verify alignment. Insert the alignment rod through the front of the suppressor. It should pass through the can and into the bore cleanly, seating with even clearance all around the rod. If the rod binds, contacts one side, or won't seat, your alignment is off. Do not fire. Remove the can and investigate (usually a thread or shoulder issue).


Step 7: Function check and test. With the can properly aligned and seated, do a function check on the unloaded rifle. Then, at a safe range, fire a single test shot and confirm normal function before proceeding.


Ongoing note: Direct thread suppressors can work loose under sustained fire. Check the tightness periodically during shooting sessions and re-snug as needed.


How to Mount a QD (Quick-Detach) Suppressor


QD systems have two parts: a muzzle device that installs permanently on the barrel, and the QD interface on the rear of the suppressor that locks onto it. There's more setup because you're installing the muzzle device first, but once it's on, mounting the can takes seconds.


Part A: Install the QD Muzzle Device (One-Time Setup)


Step 1: Secure the upper in a vise. Use a vise block or reaction rod to hold the upper receiver. Never clamp the bare barrel.


Step 2: Remove the old muzzle device and clean the threads. Wipe the barrel threads clean.


Step 3: Hand-thread the QD muzzle device on. It must start smoothly and thread on cleanly. The device has to seat fully against the barrel's bearing shoulder (unless the design specifically calls for crush-washer crown seating; follow the manufacturer's instructions).


Step 4: Time the device with shims or a crush washer. Most QD muzzle devices have to be "timed" so any ports face the correct direction and, critically, so the QD interface aligns concentrically with the bore. Use a shim kit (preferred, reusable, precise) or a crush washer to set the final orientation while achieving proper torque. The muzzle device's ports should end up where the manufacturer specifies.


Step 5: Torque to spec. Torque the muzzle device to the manufacturer's value, typically around 25 to 30 ft-lbs, with the appropriate thread locker or Rocksett per their instructions. Achieve the timing within the torque range, not by under-torquing.


Step 6: Verify muzzle device alignment. Before you ever mount the can, check the muzzle device's concentricity with an alignment rod through the device and into the bore. Even clearance means good alignment. This is the step that prevents baffle strikes on QD systems.


Part B: Mount the Suppressor (Every Time)


Step 1: Confirm the mounting surfaces are clean. Wipe carbon off both the muzzle device and the suppressor's mounting interface. Carbon buildup here causes poor lockup and eventual carbon lock.


Step 2: Engage the QD mechanism per the manufacturer's instructions. This varies by system. Some cans thread on until they lock (like the HX-QD, which threads counterclockwise onto the muzzle device until hand-tight, then locks). Others use a ratcheting collar, a cam lever, or a taper that seats and locks. Follow your specific system's procedure.


Step 2 detail for taper systems: For taper-mount QD systems (Dead Air KeyMo, SilencerCo ASR, Rugged Dual Taper, etc.), thread the can down until it seats firmly on the tapered shoulder and the locking mechanism engages. The taper does the alignment; the lock holds it there. These self-tighten slightly under recoil.


Step 3: Confirm lockup. The suppressor should be firmly locked with no wobble or play. Give it a gentle check to confirm the locking mechanism is fully engaged.


Step 4: Verify alignment the first time. The first time you mount a can to a newly installed muzzle device, confirm alignment with the rod (if the design allows) or at minimum inspect visually that the can sits straight and concentric. Because you already verified the muzzle device alignment in Part A, subsequent mounts should repeat that alignment automatically, which is one of the advantages of a quality QD system.


Step 5: Function check and test fire. Function check unloaded, then fire a test shot at a safe range.


How to Mount a HUB Suppressor


HUB isn't a separate mounting method so much as a universal adapter system. A HUB-compatible suppressor has a 1.375x24 internal thread at the rear that accepts either a direct thread mount or a QD mount. You choose the mount, screw it into the can, and then mount the can using whichever method that mount uses.

Step 1: Choose your HUB mount. Decide whether you want direct thread (lightest, for a dedicated host) or a QD taper mount (fast, for multi-host use). Buy the HUB-compatible mount in the correct thread pitch for direct thread, or the correct QD pattern for QD.


Step 2: Install the mount into the suppressor. Remove any existing rear mount from the HUB can. Clean the 1.375x24 threads. Apply a small amount of Rocksett or high-temp anti-seize. Thread the new HUB mount into the rear of the suppressor by hand, then torque to the mount manufacturer's spec (commonly 40 to 80 ft-lbs on the HUB-to-can interface). This is a firmer torque than you might expect, and it's important, an under-torqued HUB mount can loosen under recoil.


Step 3: Let the thread compound cure if used. If you used Rocksett, allow the full cure time (often 24 hours) before firing. This creates a permanent-until-you-want-it bond that resists heat and recoil.


Step 4: Mount the can using the installed mount's method. If you installed a direct thread mount, follow the direct thread procedure above (clean barrel threads, anti-seize, hand-thread, snug, verify alignment). If you installed a QD mount, follow the QD procedure (install the matching muzzle device on the barrel first, then lock the can on).


Step 5: Verify alignment and test. As always, confirm bore alignment with the rod the first time, function check, and test fire.



The Alignment Rod Check (Do Not Skip This)


This is the single most important safety step, so it gets its own section. An alignment rod is a precision-ground rod sized to your caliber. You insert it through the front of the mounted suppressor, and it should pass through the center of every baffle and seat into the bore with even, concentric clearance all the way around.


How to use it:


  1. With the suppressor mounted and the rifle unloaded and pointed in a safe direction, insert the caliber-appropriate rod through the muzzle end of the can.

  2. Slide it through until it enters the bore.

  3. Observe the clearance around the rod as it passes through each baffle and enters the barrel. It should be even all the way around, with no contact on any side.


What the results mean:


  • Rod passes cleanly with even clearance: Alignment is good. Safe to proceed to a test shot.

  • Rod contacts one side, binds, or won't seat: Alignment is off. Do not fire. A misaligned can will suffer a baffle strike. Remove it and investigate: check that the mount seated fully, that the threads are clean, that the muzzle device is properly timed and torqued, and that you're not stacking an out-of-spec adapter.


Do this check every time you install a mount for the first time, or any time you change the mounting setup. Once a quality QD or HUB system is verified, it repeats its alignment on subsequent mounts, but the first verification is non-negotiable.


Common Suppressor Mounting Mistakes


1. Skipping the alignment rod check. The one mistake that can destroy your can and injure you. A $60 rod prevents a multi-thousand-dollar baffle strike. Never skip it on a first install.


2. Mismatched thread pitch. Forcing a 5/8x24 mount onto a 1/2x28 barrel (or vice versa) damages threads and can cause catastrophic misalignment. Confirm your pitch first.


3. Not using anti-seize, then getting carbon lock. Without high-temp anti-seize, carbon can weld the can to the mount over enough rounds, making removal extremely difficult. Apply it at every install.


4. Under-torquing a QD muzzle device or HUB mount. An under-torqued mount loosens under recoil, which shifts alignment and can lead to a baffle strike. Torque to spec, and never back a muzzle device off to achieve timing, tighten up to it.


5. Cross-threading. If a mount doesn't start smoothly by hand, stop. Forcing a cross-threaded mount damages the threads permanently.


6. Forgetting the can can get hot. Suppressors get extremely hot. Never touch a recently fired can with bare hands, and let it cool before removing (direct thread cans especially).
